Justine Goussot

Justine Goussot is a French choreographer, multidisciplinary artist, and dance instructor whose work spans contemporary dance, classical Indian dance, music, and multimedia performance.

Her multidisciplinary foundation stems from extensive training across various disciplines: piano at the Conservatoire International de Paris (classical) and CIAM (jazz), vocal studies, musicology at Rouen University, philosophy at Bordeaux University, contemporary dance at the Conservatory of Bordeaux, and Kathak classical Indian dance in Varanasi, India. She holds a titleof Contemporary Dance Professor from the PESM (Pôle d’Enseignement Supérieur de la Musique et de la Danse).

Choreographic Work

As the artistic director of La Lali Dance Company since 2011, Goussot creates multidisciplinary works at the intersection of dance, theater, music, and digital media.

The company’s artistic vision is built on two foundations: exploring the dialogue between contemporary art and traditional forms through immersive experiences, and developing innovative performances where music, theater, technology, and dance coexist without hierarchy.

The company’s works, including both original creations and commissioned pieces, have been presented internationally at national theaters, museums, opera houses, and festivals, most recently at Eleusis 2023, European Capital of Culture.

Goussot has also been invited to present her work and research at international academic conferences in Greece and Japan.

Performance and Collaboration

As a performer, Goussot moves fluidly between roles as dancer, musician, and multidisciplinary artist.

Her collaborations span diverse genres including live music (with Klezmer Yunan and M.O.T.Z.), contemporary music compositions (Georges Aperghis, Nefeli Stammatogianopoulou), opera productions (Lilo Bar), and theatrical works (with ChoristoferBocker, Jérôme Sansom, and Astronautes company).

Her performances have been featured at major venues including the National Operas of Bordeaux, Saint-Etienne, and Lausanne, as well as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Athens and Epidaurus Festival.

Pedagogy

Goussot’s teaching practice spans professional institutions (National Opera of Athens, Conservatory of Athens), psychiatric hospitals, dance studios across France, Greece, India, and Sweden, and specialized programs for singers and actors.

Her pedagogy is distinguished by its adaptability, drawing from her diverse experience to address each audience’s unique needs and specificities. This responsive approach, combined with multiple methodologies, allows her to create meaningful learning experiences whether working with professional dancers, psychiatric patients, or performing artists from other disciplines.

Her pedagogical approach integrates multiple methodologies:

Contemporary Dance Technique

Her teaching draws from the Release technique while emphasizing Doris Humphrey’s concepts of “fall and recovery.” This approach focuses on the body’s relationship with gravity, precise execution in the interplay between weight and tonicity, and deep attention to skeletal alignment and core musculature. Classes incorporate complex coordination patterns and musical elements to enhance neuromuscular development.

Physical Phenomena and Movement Research

Goussot’s unique research explores movement through the lens of physical phenomena, investigating the boundary between controlled movement and natural kinetic responses. This work examines how physical forces can initiate and guide movement, developing dancers’ sensitivity to these natural impulses.

Cross-Cultural Dance Practice

Drawing from her expertise in both contemporary and Indian classical dance, Goussot offers specialized workshops exploring the rhythmic, aesthetic, and cultural foundations of Indian dance within a contemporary context. She has developed a distinctive methodology for teaching Kathak to Western dancers, incorporating contemporary dance concepts to bridge cultural and technical differences in movement approaches.
